Surprise Your Volunteers!

It is almost the middle of July and the start of Fall ministries is just around the corner. This year as you serve with your team of volunteers, consider planning opportunities to surprise and delight your volunteers! We are all busy people . . . and yet, in spite of being busy, you have people who have volunteered to give of themselves and their time to serve in your ministry! This is something truly wonderful!

So, take some time this week to plan and be intentional about surprising and thanking your volunteers all year long! Consider the following ideas . . .
  • September . . . kick off your volunteer surprises by choosing a day to just show up wherever your volunteers are - at work or at their home - to give them a small treat with a note attached where you share your appreciation for them
  • October . . . recruit a few parents and ask them to write a thank you to their child's teacher/shepherd and hand deliver it to them.
  • November . . . ask the children to make "thank-you's" for their teacher/shepherd and then give them to them on a certain Sunday.
  • December . . . make Christmas cookies and deliver them to your volunteers!
  • January . . . select a Scripture passage, personalize it into a prayer and mail them to your volunteers to let them know what you will be praying for them in the coming year.
  • February . . . pick up some "heart" candy at the store and write a note thanking your volunteers for sharing Jesus' love with the children in your church - give to the volunteers on the Sunday closest to Valentines Day.
  • March . . . give each volunteer a single flower.
  • April . . . take a photo of each teacher/shepherd with the children in their class/group - print these and give one to each teacher/shepherd.
  • May . . . choose a day to once again just show up wherever your volunteers are - at work or at their home - to give them a small treat with a note attached where you share your appreciation for them.
  • June . . . plan a "Hearts for our Teacher" "pot-faith" at your church after Sunday service . . . ask everyone who is NOT a volunteer to bring food - enough for their family and one other family - let volunteers know they may NOT bring food - plan to bring extra so you have enough for everyone. Ask everyone to bring a "heart" gift for their teacher/shepherd and then after dinner allow everyone to "shower" their teacher/shepherd with their "heart" gift!
  • July - or August - invite your volunteers and their families to a special picnic - plan for games and food and fun!

Be intentional about surprising your volunteers. Be intentional about showing them how very much you appreciate and value them! What might you do to surprise your volunteers this year?
