VBS 2015 Top Five - Everest from Group Publishing

When it comes to Vacation Bible School, there are a few publishers who many of us have come to almost automatically put their VBS in our "check this out pile"; Group is one of the publishers, for good reason, as their materials are engaging, fun and fresh each year!

This year they have four VBS resources for you to consider . . . yes, I said, four! Today I'm looking at their "traditional" kit - if anything Group produces could be considered "traditional"! Everest is their main VBS for 2015 and if you select it to use somewhere in your ministry, the children of your church and community will learn to, "conquer challenges with God's mighty power!" Definitely something we all need to learn!

  1. God has the power to provide - God provides for Elijah - I Kings 17
  2. God has the power to comfort - God speaks to Elijah - I Kings 19
  3. God has the power to heal - God heals Naaman - 2 Kings 5
  4. God has the power to forgive - Jesus dies on a cross to take away our sins, then comes back to life - Luke 22:31-24:12
  5. God has the power to love us forever - Jesus promises us an eternal home - John 14:1-3
Setting – Children embark on an "icy" mountain adventure and will "explore" one of the most majestic, beautiful (and sometimes dangerous!) places on earth as they "trek" Everest!
Message/Theme – "When you make it to the top of Everest, you're at the highest point on earth. But Jesus is higher still! He promises to provide, to comfort, to love us forever and more. At Everest, your children learn His awesome power is enough to overcome any 'mountain' or problem in their lives!"
Focus – Evangelism, Application, Content
Strengths –
  • As I would expect, Everest has amazing, creative and engaging Bible lessons! I’m so glad to see children engaged in the Bible lessons but would like to see station leaders open and read from their Bible, or have children do this – this helps children make the visual connection the lesson they are hearing/experiencing is from the Bible!
  • I LOVE KidVid Cinema - it is brilliant! I can absolutely see how this station will encourage important conversations between children and their crew leaders and provide opportunities for children to come to know Jesus and to also learn to know Him better! I love the focus involved with giving each child their daily Bible Memory Buddy - excellent!
  • I love the Imagination Station again this year!!! I LOVE "Talk Starters", Kids will LOVE the “Sciency-Fun Gizmos”! Kids are going to look forward to the daily Base Camp Question - fun addition to the Imagination Station! I am very happy to see how Operation-Kid-2-Kid is connected with Imagination Station!
  • Love the “God Sightings” – great way to get kids to focus on noticing how God works in their lives!
  • I love all the creative resources to help churches decorate! Group makes turning your church into a snowy mountain very easy!
  • “Huddle and a Prayer” time is great – love the way it helps kids see their crew leaders are praying for them!
  • Group once again has a great Opening and Finale – with lots of energy and an abundance of creative ways to engage kids! I'm happy to see information provided each day to let children know about the animals on their Bible Memory Buddies, Love it!
  • Operation Kid 2 Kid is an excellent mission project which gives children the opportunity to raise money to send Bibles to children in Thailand!
Would like to see –
  • Ideas to help kids serve in their own communities
  • I'd like to see how Group could creatively write lessons which involve children in opening their Bibles during the Bible lessons.
  • Last year I said, "I was disappointed to see only a few 'token' children in the music video. Nearly all the singers are teens+. I'd like to see Group bring back their music videos which have children singing in them - NOT teens." This year I am saying the same thing - I'd really rather see just children, NOT teens on the music video.
  • A more affordable “basic” kit option for churches on a very tight budget
Group says,"Embark on an icy expedition where kids overcome obstacles with God's awesome power. Anchor kids in rock-solid Bible truths which will guide them through life's challenges."

Certainly this is a message children – and adults - need to hear. Everest is a great option for a VBS with a strong focus on creatively engaging children in every learning station, solid evangelism, strong Bible content and application! If you are looking for a VBS with a focus on engaging children and a strong message about how powerful God is and how much He loves them, most certainly take a look at Everest from Group!

  2. Thanks so much for the VBS reviews! I appreciate that you do this for us! Without having each kit in front of me it is hard to decide which VBS fits our goals and mission statement. Blessings! Debbie
