Top Ten Countdown for Vacation Bible School 2011 - Thursday, January 6th's Post . . . "Kickin' it Old School" from the Go Fish Guys!!

Welcome to the fourth day of my Top Ten Countdown for Vacation Bible School 2011; my Top Pick for VBS 2011 will be announced on January 14th, but today we are looking at "Kickin' it Old School" from the Go Fish Guys! This year Go Fish invites you to take your children to an '80's retro-hip-hop concert where they will learn Who God Is and how they can know Him!

Scope and Sequence

1. This is My Father's World - God Is Our Creator - Isaiah 44:24; Genesis 5:21, 22; Hebrews 4:13
2. Before the Throne of God - God Is Our King - Isaiah 46:9; Exodus 25-40; Psalm 47
3. I Love to Tell the Story - Jesus Is Our Savior - Hebrews 7:25; John 19:28-30; Hebrews 8:1, 2; 9:11, 12
4. I'm a Soldier In the Army of the Lord - God Is Our Truth - Ephesians 6:10, 13-17
5. The Solid Rock - God Is Our rock - Hebrews 13:8; II Corinthians 11:23-28; Romans 8:38,39

Theme - Children will spend time in God's Word learning the Attributes of God and what it means to be a Christian!

Strong Points -

1. Solid Bible Lessons - strong salvation emphasis in each lesson and reminder for children who know Jesus that He loves and will never leave them so they can share His love with others!
2. Excellent information on how to involve children with special needs including ideas for special modifications and how to make transitions more comfortable for children with special needs - tremendously well done!
3. Excellent commitment to and focus on God's Word - everything about this VBS emphasizes the Truth that God, His Holiness, His separation from Sin and His Word never changes.
4. Excellent info on decorating - the Go Fish Guys help you transform your church into an exciting concert venue!
5. I love that all student and teacher materials are reproducible!
6. Mission project - oneverse/The Seed Company - the children in your VBS will raise money to pay for translating Scripture into the languages of unreached people around the world. (see the website at www.oneverse.org). Excellent materials for a Missions station!

Would Like to See - 

1. While the lessons are solidly grounded in God's Word, and there are some creative and intentional portions designed to engage the children in the teaching of the lessons, I'd like to see that engagement woven throughout the entire lesson - beyond having children just answer a question or read verses. I really loved the activity in the first lesson where children were encouraged to draw their favorite part of God's creation on butcher paper hung on the walls. I'd like to see more of this.
2. More activities and object lessons designed to reinforce the Bible truths that engage the children in the opening and close each day. 
3. I would really like to see opportunities and activities built into the lessons to help children serve their own communities.
4. I'd like to see a more complete director's manual. Information to help churches determine their goals, how to screen volunteers and how to plan for safety - both inside and outside as well as in case of fire or severe weather. Many churches have new VBS directors each year and they appreciate a complete director's manual so they can be sure to cover all the bases. I'd also like to see training for volunteers and ideas for follow up with children and families touched by the VBS!

I appreciate the commitment to God's Word that is shown in every part of this VBS! This is a resource every church should consider utilizing . . . if not for VBS, think about how you can use this in another area of your ministry. Since everything is reproducible you can use this resource any time of the year without having to be concerned about being able to get materials after the summer is over. Go Fish Guy's VBS is absolutely worth considering - for VBS and for other areas of your children's ministry!
