Instant Family Devotions - Book Review

There are many things we do when we serve in a children's ministry, evaluate and select curriculum, recruit and train volunteers, support and encourage volunteers, teach, lead small groups, pay attention to the details, communicate with parents and the list goes on. One thing we can, and should do, is find family resources and share those with the families in our ministries. If we want to support, encourage and help equip parents, one way we can do this is by sharing resources with them. I recently had the opportunity to review the book, Instant Family Devotions by Mike Nappa and Jill Wuellner . . . this is a resource well worth sharing with the families in your ministry!

  • love the C.S. Lewis quote at the beginning of the book - "We feed children in order that they may soon be able to feed themselves; we teach them in order that they may soon not need our teaching."
  • Section one has 26 family discussions from the Old Testament
  • Section two has 26 family discussions from the New Testament
  • Twenty Tips for Fantastic Family Discussions in the Appendix
  • Love the introduction and the "purpose" of Instant Family Devotions . . . "To help you and your kids add a few fun, faith-building conversations to your twenty-first century lifestyle. To help you take charge of the faith-growth opportunities that come during the raising of a child. To help you join the on-going conversation about God that goes on every day in your child's mind and life. To help you be ready - anytime, anywhere - with a few Bible-centered family devotions to share with your kids. To give you an easy-to-use tool for making fun, family faith memories that'll last a lifetime."
  • Each devotion includes a theme, Scripture, opening activity, questions to help you "dig into" the Bible passage, focus on understanding and living what you learned
  • I love the "behind the scenes" box in each devotion with insights for the parents so they are able to help their children understand the Bible passage they are reading!
  • Parent Tips are sure to be used by parents!
  • Scripture and Theme Indexes
This little book will help families dig into God's Word and really enjoy doing so! I love the focus on understanding and living what they learn and how the book walks a family through the Bible. Very easy to use, just open the book and follow the questions . . . if you can read, you can lead your family in getting to know God, one another and yourself better!
