2013 Top Ten VBS Countdown - #10 - Kingdom Rock - Group

Today as I begin my Top Ten VBS Count-down for 2013 I'm happy to share with you the VBS which is #10 - Kingdom Rock from Group Publishing. Kingdom Rock is great fun, but most importantly, has solid Bible teaching and learning!

Kingdom Rock
Group Publishing
  1. God's love helps us stand strong - David writes about God's love - Psalm 23
  2. Family and friends help us stand strong - Mordecai encourages Esther to do the right thing - Esther 1 - 9
  3. Prayer helps us stand strong - Nehemiah perseveres to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem - Nehemiah 1 - 6
  4. Trusting God helps us stad strong - Jesus dies and comes back to life - Luke 22 - 24
  5. The Bible helps us stand strong - King Josiah follows God's way - 2 Kings 22 - 23
Setting – a colossal castle surrounded by strong stone walls, brightly flaming wall sconces and a view of the king's royal throne of red velvet.
Message/Theme – Kids will discover they can always stand strong for God because they have help; they have God's love, family and friends, prayer, trusting God and the Bible to help them!
Focus – Evangelism, Application, Content

Strengths –
  • As I would expect, Kingdom Rock has amazing, creative and engaging Bible lessons! I’m so glad to see stronger Bible content in the Bible lessons this year and during lessons station leaders are encouraged to open and read from their Bible – this helps children make the visual connection the lesson they are hearing/experiencing is from the Bible!
  • I love the Imagination Station again this year!!! Kids will LOVE the “Sciency-Fun Gizmos”! Another huge “plus” for this is how affordable the gizmos are!!! Thank you Group for keeping it affordable!!!
  • Love the addition of "Talk Starters" at the beginning of Imagination Station each day.
  • Love the “Why it Matters” portion of the volunteer’s daily devotions!
  • Love the “God Sightings” – great way to get kids to focus on noticing how God works in their lives!
  • I love all the creative resources to help churches decorate! Group makes decorating for a castle theme look easy and fun!
  • “Huddle and a Prayer” time is great – love the way it helps kids see their crew leaders are praying for them!
  • Group once again has the best Opening and Finale – with lots of energy and an abundance of creative ways to engage kids! Love it!
  • Operation Kid 2 Kid is an excellent mission project which involves children in praying for Hindi children in India so they will know they are loved by God!
  • I really like the new look for the Bible Memory Buddies, but instead of one long chain to keep them on, maybe hooks of some sort so kids could fasten them to their backpacks to remind them of what they learned - especially when they return to school.
Would like to see –
  • Ideas to help kids serve in their own communities – maybe Group could completely eliminate Chadder and in the Missions station also have a portion of it focused on the kids doing things to serve their own communities! I believe this local service component would be an amazing addition to Group VBS!
  • A more affordable “basic” kit option for churches on a very tight budget
  • As just mentioned, eliminate Chadder. Group is known for their innovation and creativity in engaging children so they experience active learning; a Chadder video does not seem to match up with Group’s philosophy. I’d much rather see an active, engaging station focused on helping children learn to serve at home, in their communities and around the world.
  • I was disappointed to see only a few "token" children in the music video. Nearly all the singers are teens+. I'd like to see Group bring back their music videos which have children singing in them - NOT teens.
  • I'd like to see how Group could creatively write lessons which involve children in opening their Bibles during the Bible lessons.
Group says, "Enter the epic adventure which empowers kids to stand strong. Here, God's victorious power isn't a fairy tale - it changes kids forever." I love the focus in each lesson; each station on encouraging children to “stand strong” and shows them the many ways God helps them to do exactly this! Certainly this is a message children – and adults - need to hear. Kingdom Rock is a great option for a VBS with a strong focus on creatively engaging children in every learning station, solid evangelism, strong Bible content and application! If you are looking for a VBS with a focus on engaging children and a strong message about standing strong, most certainly take a look at Kingdom Rock from Group!
