Curriculum Review - Large Group/Small Group - DiscipleTown!

I'm delighted to share DiscipleTown with you today - it is written by Karl Bastian - the Kidologist! I particularly enjoyed reviewing DiscipleTown as it is well written and focused. While an entire quarter wasn't available for review, they do allow you to download one sample lesson from each four week series - this allows you the opportunity to get a really good "feel" for this curriculum! It is presented as a "Children's Church curriculum" and while it would certainly be an excellent resource for children's church, I think it is well worth taking a look at it as a Large Group/Small Group curriculum for Sunday School. Allow me to share with you some information about DiscipleTown curriculum!
Strengths -
  • Biblically Sound
  • Entirely reproducible
  • Children are intentionally engaged throughout the lesson with activities and questions/discussions - the children are actively engaged in the lessons by being able to help teach the lessons
  • Scope is built around the idea of "teaching practical 'Disciple Skills' which every follower of Jesus Christ must develop in order to grow and live victoriously."
  • Parent materials are included so parents are able to continue the learning at home throughout the week - "DiscipleTown Table Talkers challenges families to set aside three times a week to discuss the principles kids are learning at DiscipleTown"
  • Colorful graphics
  • Excellent, engaging videos, object lessons and crafts throughout the lessons capture children's attention and help them remember, understand and live God's Word!
  • Unique and intentional "multi-cultural emphasis to help children learn Jesus loves and saves children all over the world, from every race and nation!"
Would like to see -
  • Weekly - "live-it" activities to help children take what they learn out the doors of the church and live it in their everyday lives every day
  • Quarterly service projects to "Put Feet to Their Faith"
  • Resources for Preschool age children
  • An opportunity for volunteers to pray Scripture for each child to bless them
I really like DiscipleTown and appreciate how it is written with the goal of intentionally engaging children so they are able to remember, understand and live God's Word for genuinely changed lives. They say, "DiscipleTown exists to make disciples. Each unit teaches a discipleship skill essential to a child's walk with Jesus. DiscipleTown will help your kids become dynamic disciples who: develop a reservoir of KNOWLEDGE based on a Biblical worldview, displays Christlike CHARACTER in every area of life and demonstrates faithful CONDUCT which honors God and helps people."

  1. I have found that Discipletown with its emphasis on "how-to" discipleship skills for children serves as a great complement to churches that have a second hour (i.e., Sunday School curriculum that focuses on going through the Bible).

Correction on the pricing. Each 4-week unit is $45 each. Some units are available in 3-unit (12-week) bundles priced at $100. But not all units are available in the bundles and some units are repeated in the bundles.

Scope& sequence: Topical (Discipleship or Christian life topics). The plan is to have 32 units (over two years or 128 total lessons), but only 20 units are available so far.
