One More Thing You Might Forget . . .

Yesterday I posted about one thing you might forget as you prepare to launch your Fall ministries. Today I want to encourage you to consider one additional thing you might forget . . . equipping parents. I realize yesterday I wrote about sitting down with the parents and sharing your scope and sequence, but I'd like to focus on spending more time to really equip parents with what their children will be learning in the coming year. We want our parents to continue the learning at home all week, but how often do we actually sit down with them to let them know what we are teaching and then share resources parents could use at home so they are able to show God's Word is "on their hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates." (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

Consider the following -
  • Print out your scope and sequence and give to parents so they are able to see exactly what their children are learning
  • Find a list of resources to help parents better understand the lessons their children are learning - ask your local Christian book store for suggestions
  • Plan to remind parents each month what the coming month will focus on
  • Consider offering adult Sunday School classes which focus on what the children are learning and on providing resources and ideas for parents so they know how to continue the learning, understanding and living of God's Word at home all week
We only have the kids in our ministries for a few hours a week - if we really want the children in our ministries to have God's Word "impressed" on their hearts, we need to team up with the parents. What will you do to equip the parents in your ministry?
