Today I'm sharing the Dollars & Cents of VBS Part 2 by breaking down the cost of the VBS resources I reviewed this past week. Obviously a starter kit is the first place to begin when purchasing VBS materials, but from there you'll need to determine what - if any - student materials you will utilize.
As far as student materials, I like the idea of being able to give children something each day which will remind them of the Bible lesson they learned. I especially like the objects/cards which can be clipped or pinned to a backpack as these things make great reminders! I also like the idea of being able to give children their own copy of the music - of course these things take money and your budget just might not have room for them. So, what will it cost and how can you move ahead with VBS on a budget?
Workshop of Wonders
Cokesbury
Cost of kit -
- Super Starter Kit - $149.99
- Basic Kit - $89.99
Cost per student -
- Student Take-Home CD for $3.99
- Workshop of Wonders Scripture Treasures - $7.99 per child
- Scripture Treasure Holders - $6.99 for six
- Student Books - $2.99 per child
- Craft kits - varies from $2.99 to $6.99 for six children
My Dollar & Cents Thoughts . . . Cokesbury does offer a basic starter kit, so you are able to buy the kit which best fits your budget and church needs. For children I'd buy the Scripture Treasure cards for a cost of $7.99 per child. The music CD could be given to families instead of each child for additional savings.

Genesis 1 Space Probe

Cost of kit -
- $65.00
- Music is not available for children; you could buy the teacher's CD, but this would cost $12.25 per CD

Praise Break
Cost of kit -

The music is available in a kit for $29.99 and includes CD, music motions DVD and drama DVD - I do not know what music resources are available for students/families.

My Dollar & Cents Thoughts . . . Abingdon Press does not offer a basic starter kit, however; this kit is affordably priced. For children the handbooks are the only item available at a cost of $2,99 per child. The music CDs could be given to each family rather than each child.

For children I'd buy the Living Inside Out Bottom Line Buttons and student books for a cost of approximately $2.20 or less depending on how many you buy, per child. Thanks for putting all this together, Lynda.
