How to Respond to Negativity

It has been my experience in children's ministry, while it is the best, most exciting and
most joy-filled area of the church in which to serve, it is also the area where negativity tends to show up the most. I think this is because everyone has their own idea of what children's ministry should look like and when it does not look like they want it to, some people become very negative.

While it can be easy to respond in kind, there are definitely a few things to keep in mind and responding right is always the best response. Consider the following . . .
  • Jesus is our ultimate example of Someone who was treated negatively and Who responded in the right way - we need to follow His example.
  • Pray. Yes, I often put this as the answer to different situations, but there is a reason for it. Pray when faced with negative people. Then pray some more. Ask God to help you stay focused on Him and to give you His perfect peace - it will make a big difference.
  • Determine to not respond in kind; no matter what
  • Return kindness for and positivity for negativity.
There is much joy to be had in serving in the children's ministry, but there will also be times when you have to deal with negative people. Don't give in to the negativity; be sure you hold on to the joy and follow Jesus' example!
