Today is the first day of my 2015 VBS reviews with a look at the VBS resource which made my Top Ten; Basic Elements from the Science VBS! As you might guess from the name, this VBS engages children with science projects - lots of them; which means, children are going to pay attention and will learn from the things they participate in throughout each morning. Take a look and consider if Basic Elements is a good "fit" for your children's ministry!- Believe - I John 5:11, 12 - the way we start a relationship with Jesus is when we believe in who He is and what He has done for us.
- Ask - Matthew 7:7 - The way we can ask God for
something is through prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God.
- Serve - I Peter 4:9,10 - To serve someone means to help them.
- Impact - Acts 1:8 - Impact is the effect we have on something. We can have an impact on the world and share Jesus with others.
- Celebrate - Revelation 21:1-5 - When we have a relationship with God; we have something to celebrate!
Message/Theme – Children will, "discover what it means to have a relationship with Jesus and
how they can live their lives for Him."

- LOVE the way this curriculum involves children in science projects throughout the morning each day of this VBS - the science projects will definitely get the children's attention!
- I LOVE the way so much intentional learning can take place in the small group Science Devotions stations - children will participate in two devotions each day and will be opening their Bibles, reading Scripture, talking about what it says and doing science projects to help them understand and remember what they are learning - EXCELLENT!
- Basic Elements has a strong evangelistic emphasis and solid Bible teaching
- Lots of information about how to prepare for each science project, where to find supplies and how to lead children through each project
- Music is well done. . . songs are Scripture songs and communicate the message, but I'd rather see just kids singing; not the same, one adult and the songs sound like the same song with just different verses - more variety in sound would be nice.
- Reproducible Music - copy and give to volunteers, families, children - everyone!
- Excellent resources to help churches turn their building and grounds into a science lab
- Curriculum available as a download and you are welcome to print as many of the resources as you need for use in your ministry.
Would like to see –
- Service projects and mission projects.
- Along with strong evangelistic emphasis, I'd like to see an emphasis on growth for children who have already trusted Jesus.
- Daily "Live-it" activities and time for children to share how they lived what they learned.
- Complete director's book with information about safety, special needs, etc.

I found BASIC Elements to be an excellent resource; I really LOVE all the science experiments which children are able to not just watch, but actually have a part in performing themselves! If you do not choose BASIC Elements for your VBS, definitely think about where you might use it in your ministry. Because there are so many activities and science projects in each lesson, it would be easy to stretch the five lessons into ten and use it over your Summer on Sunday mornings! Just imagine what an exciting Summer you would have with science projects and real Bible learning each Sunday in your church!
