Equip the Children in Your Ministry with a Confident Faith by Teaching the "Whys" with Anchored!

You will likely agree with me when I write - Children's Ministry is mostly about teaching the "whats" - what the Bible says and therefore what we believe. Pretty much every curriculum resource published focuses upon the "whats", which of course greatly influences what we teach. But when you think about it, pretty much everything at church is about the "whats" - pastors preach/teach the "whats" and every age at church tends to focus upon the "whats" in their classes.

There are certainly solid reasons for this focus on the "whats" - it matters what we believe, we want everyone to know what the Bible says, God has promised His Word will not return empty - it will accomplish what God planned for it to do, and we believe the Bible is true, so of course we want to teach the children we love what the Bible says.

But, if we only teach the "whats" and do not also teach the "whys" - why we are able to believe God is real, the Bible is true, God and science do go together, and God is good, only teaching the "whats" leaves us in the place where we currently find ourselves - Gen Z is turning away from their faith to atheism at double the rate of any previous generation (Barna). Yes, at double the rate.

It absolutely matters for us to teach the ones we love the "whats", but it is equally important for us to teach them the "whys" as well because when we teach the "whys" we are equipping them so they are able to have a confident faith - why wouldn't we want to do this?

While there are many resources available to help churches, parents, and grandparents teach the "whats", there are few available to help teach the "whys" - few, but not zero. I am happy to let you know about a fantastic resource from BioLogos - Integrate Curriculum. This resource is for High School and College age young people and you will find it at this link. While it is written for the home school or school setting, I highly recommend getting it and finding ways to "integrate" it into your Youth Ministry. (You will find it at this link.)

I am very happy the Integrate resource is available, but firmly believe we must begin teaching and equipping the children we love by teaching them the "whys" at a young age - starting at age four. This is why I have developed a resource which is able to be used by any church as a supplement to the curriculum they are currently using. Anchored is designed as a supplemental curriculum - you use it for a few minutes each Sunday/Wednesday and then send resources to parents/grandparents for them to continue the teaching at home each week. As churches team up with parents and grandparents to teach the "whys" they will find they are doing something important, something essential - they are equipping these children with a confident faith!

I am almost ready to release Anchored! Stay tuned for more information, but if you are curious, check our blog at this link. We need to teach the "whys" and Anchored will equip you to do so!
